Rath Yatra Dates:-

Rath Yatra Date 2020 :-  23 June 2020

Bahuda Yatra Date 2020 :- 1 July 2020

Rath Yatra Date 2019 :-  4 July 2019

Ratha Yatra Date 2021:-  12 July 2021

 Ratha Yatra at Puri does not fall on a singe date. It varies according to the Odia calendar. That is the reason you saw different date for different year.

What is Rath Yatra:-

Rath Yatra is called “RATHA JATRA” in odia. This is the biggest festival of odisha. In this festival lord Jagannath, brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra sit in a chariot and go to their Gundicha Auntie house and stay there for some days and then return. What is Ulta Rath yatra:-

Ulta Rath yatra  is called “BAHUDA JATRA” in odia. When lord jagannath, brother balabhadra and sister Subhadra return to their own home from Gundicha Auntie house that is called Ulta rath yatra.

When Chariot work Begins: -

Beginning of the Ratha work starts on Akhyaya Tritiya which is like 42 days before Ratha yatra in Puri. Every year the Chariot is made newly by lots of dedicated carpenters who are doing the work for number of years. The Ratha work continues outside the temple on BADA DANDA. If you visit at that time then you can see the beautiful work.

The Rope for chariot also gets prepared at that time only which is very thick. Its called as RATHA DAUDI.

The Famous Chandan Jatra also starts on same day.

What happens on Ratha Yatra Day:-

First PAHANDI is done. Which is like all the gods are brought from temple to chariot.by doing rituals and in some  style going forward in a step by step movement to the accompaniment of several devotees beating the ghanta, kahali and telingi baja.

Then CHHERA PRAHARA is done. Hich is like the King of puri sweeps the Ratha with a golden broom, sprinkling flowers, and fragrant water on the surface of the chariot.

Then Pulling the chariot starts where all participates and pulls the chariot on Bada Danda towards the Gundicha temple.

It happens phase by phase like after little distance its stops and then pulling starts.

It’s a belief that if you have gone there you have to pull the chariot and make a wish and your wish will be true.

What happens on Bahuda Yatra Day:-

Its same procedure happened on Bahuda Day also. Like Pahandi, Chhera prahara and chariot pulling.

The next day of Bahuda Yatra Suna Besa happens. Which is like gods wore all of their gold and its very beautiful. Lots of people go to see this.

 The Last one is NILADRI BIJE. Which is like all gods return to temple. Rasagolla is offered to God on this day.

 

How Rath Yatra is celebrated in America: -

In America mostly every major city celebrates Ratha yatra. They start the preparation one month before and then do the Charriot pulling on the Ratha yatra day. Lots of Iskon temples also celebrate Ratha yatra in America. So, its like its celebrated all over the world where Odia population is there.

Rath Yatra 2020:-

Due to Corona Situation Supreme court initially gave notice to stop Rath Yatra in Puri this year. But finally given permission for rath yatra ith only Sebayata and police. Jagannath Rath yatra 2019 was very good and very nice. Rath yatra live comes on every year on many sites. PuriRathaYatra is world famous because its very big and celebrated hugely.
